For the Barry Harris student pianist, Barry Harris’s dominant harmonic runs—often taught through his “Family of Dominants” and dominant bebop scale concepts—offer a logical system for creating chromatic movement, added tensions, and smooth voice-leading in jazz improvisation. Harris explains that a single diminished seventh chord generates a “Family of Four” related dominant seventh chords. Because the diminished chord is symmetrical, lowering any one of its notes by a half-step produces the root of a different dominant seventh chord. This relationship allows pianists to move fluidly between connected dominant harmonies while maintaining strong melodic continuity. Through these dominant families and flowing bebop lines, Harris developed a method that transforms advanced harmonic movement into a practical improvisational language for jazz piano.
